I got my first dog when I was eight. He was this crazy little terri-poo with a Jekyll and Hyde personality. He grew up on Milk Bones, kibble and some disgusting smelling canned stuff that I am sure was never a recognizable form of meat. Maybe that’s why he was so grumpy.
I admit, I fed supermarket kibble to all of my dogs until I got my first “training manual” from Bonnie - a book called “Food Pets Die For” (www.critterchat.net/foodpets.htm)
I had NO idea – none, nadda, zippo. I have a background in HUMAN food production (Food Science degree) and assumed animal food had to go through regulations to ensure safety and nutrition. HMPH! Sawdust, other people’s companion animal and now plastic (melamine)… what’s going on here?
To be honest, I didn’t really think about what I was feeding my dog. Don’t get me wrong – I really cared about my pets but I just had no idea I could be doing something better for them. So now that I know that human food is not bad for dogs (who came up with that idea anyway?!?) I routinely make my two boys home-cooked stews made with loads of good for dogs human food like spinach, sweet potato and real meat – recognizable, certifiable meat. I’ve learned that not all human foods are suitable for dogs. But the list is short and easy to learn. We’ll get to that another day.
One big batch of stew gets cooked up every couple weeks, frozen in portions, and thawed out when I need it – easy-peasy. Ok, maybe not that easy. It is time consuming to shop and chop. But I know what is going in there, and in a pinch, I could eat their stew if I was so inclined (although the days when I throw sardines and liver in with the hamburger it’s not that tempting). And I definitely know that I can eat the biscuits. I’ve baked them myself. There is really nothing like a fresh out of the oven Two Cheese Pizza biscuits. MMMM! Get over that mental hurdle. Think of it as cookie…good enough for humans, but made for dogs (say it using the announcer voice from the Secret deodorant commercials).
I still have a kibble habit but I have significantly cut back and I only buy really good quality stuff. I mix it in with the dogs' stew. I like to think of it as adding texture but I really add it because it is easy. Life is busy and we don't always have the time to make up a home cooked meal for ourselves or our pets. I get that. I live that. Maybe Lucky Dog will come up with a great alternative to help busy families keep up with the good nutrition. I KNOW Lucky Dog can come up with a good alternative - just give us time. Lots of GOOD things are coming!
What's your dog's favourite Lucky Dog Biscuits flavour? Have you tried them yet?
