About the pumpkin in a second.
This is a snapshot of Lucky Dog Biscuits Peanut Butter and Saskatoon Berry biscuits. If you haven't had them before, they're kind of round and about the size of the end of your thumb. Check it out. You can actually see the good stuff in there; the saskatoon berries, the coarse ground flax and the colour of that yummy natural peanut butter. MMM MMM MMM! And you should smell them, they smell amazing. This is one of the reason why we do what we do. We couldn't find anything that clearly resembled the ingredients on the back of the package. They all seem to say they have these great ingredients but you can't see them at all. To us, this made no sense because, clearly, if you add ingredients in any kind of significant level, you can see them! Some biscuit companies will add spices with very strong color like paprika or turmeric to give the impression that there's a lot of those good ingredients in there, rather than just enough to get it on the ingredient label. Not here!
Debbie Strange asked - How many biscuits can I feed Daisy a day? I'm guessing Daisy is about 25 lbs? Daisy can have lots of biscuits a day, 10 or more (which is 25g), it doesn't really matter because the biscuits are high quality, highly digestible and full of people quality nutrients. What does matter is that you reduce the amount of food you feed Daisy so she's not taking in too much food AND treats. If you feed more treats, you have to reduce the amount of food you feed her relative to how many biscuits you give her. This will make sure she doesn't get overweight from too much food and treats. I would not give this advice about any dog treats. Lucky Dog Biscuits are different because they have to much nutritious value. There are lots of treats with absolutely no nutritious value and those I would not recommend you feed too many of since they will take the place of more nutritious food, super nutritous food if you home make your food and that's not a good idea.
We've been absolutely sold out of biscuits for a few weeks but we have a big batch coming through the bakery and we're super pumped! The recall has caught the attention of consumers and they're switching over to the good stuff. This is super good news for all those NEW LUCKY DOGS out there!
How to deal with a dog who has Diarrhea
Sorry, not a very smooth transition there but it came up yesterday so we thought we'd help you out. Spring is fabulous time at the dog park; nice green grass, big muddy puddles full of bacteria and thawing dog poo, again, full of bacteria. Spring is also a perfect time to try and switch up to a higher quality or fresh dog food. Both of which can cause loose stools
If you find your dog has soft or looser stools try feeding them a teaspoon to a tablespoon of canned pumpkin with their meal. Pumpkin is a fabulous natural remedy for soft stools or diarrhea. Canned pumpkin(not pumpkin pie filling) is full of fibre and will help harden the stools back up. Be careful, like a typical fibre, if you feed too much, you'll get even looser stools. Between a teaspoon and a tablespoon with meals will be fine. If you're noticing a much more runny or mucosy diarrhea, fast your dog for 12 to 24 hours. This will help your dog's gut heal and he'll often be fine after this. If there is still some diarrhea, feed small frequent meals of boiled ground beef and overcooked rice. The protein will give him the nutrients he needs to get over whatever is going on and the rice is just nice and easy on the gut. Small frequent meals will help the gut digest but not be any further traumatized. If the diarrhea pursists after these efforts or is accompanied by vomiting, visit your veterinarian. Diarrhea causes water loss so your dog can become dehydrated if it goes on for too long, especially if it's accompanied by vomiting. Just a note here that diarrhea with vomiting is not likely to be caused by switching food but some bug or foreign object in the gut.
Kal asked - Where do I find hearts and kidney? You can sometimes find both at your larger grocery stores. Kidney tends to be more available than heart I find. If heart isn't available, you can ask if they have any in the back or you can try a local butcher. These are great places to start shopping for ingredients for the dog food. Some will keep different parts aside for you. They're also a great place to find bones for dogs.
Shayla - I will respond you your question on Lyme Disease Vaccinations tomorrow.
Have a great day and we'll talk to you tomorrow!
