Potato fever..kinda

In most recipes we create, we use sweet potatoes. We talked about sweet potatoes here because they're in the Cheddar Cheese and Roasted Garlic biscuits and the BBQ Chicken and Sweet Potato biscuits (maybe that was obvious). We use them in our biscuits and in the food we make because

1. they are an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and a very good source of vitamin C, and have healing properties as an antioxidant food.  In fact according to Advances in Food and Nutrition Research (vol 52), if you can get your hands on the purple fleshed sweet potatoes, these contain more of the antioxidant called anthocyanins than blueberries, 3.2 times more. AND if you include the skin, IT has 3 times more antioxidents than the flesh! You and your dog will be PULSING with antioxidants. Nice!
2. Vitamin A and C are anti-inflammatory nutrients and therefore can be helpful in reducing the severity of conditions where inflammation plays a role, such as arthritis.. good for older dogs.
3. It is also recently been considered an "antidiabetic" food because it help stabilize blood sugar levels and lowered insulin resistance.

We've used regular potatoes before in a pinch and this is what WE learned.

1. they take longer to cook
2. you have to mash them or they will not be absorbed

How do I know you ask?? My current example is Hudson. Hudson is a 2 year old Dogue du Bordeaux or French Mastiff. Super cool, easy going dog. The Turner and Hooch type. I'd show you a recent picture but I can't get one because he's currently stuck in EMERGENCY WITH A BLOCKED INTESTINE! Blocked by what you ask? A whole nugget potato.

Hudson's dad thought that nugget potatoes were surely small enough already and that they didn't need further chopping. He was wrong. The current prognosis for Hudson is that he will be alright. The nugget potato has slowly started to move after being stuck in Hudson's intestines for 4 days causing him to vomit anything in his system.

Potatoes are tricky. It's not that crazy to think that a whole nugget potato is small enough and doesn't need further chopping, but it wasn't. If you're dog is a "wolfer" like we talked about when feeding pigs ears YOU need to take the time to make sure nothing is large enough to get lodged in your dog's intestines, cause "wolfer dogs" sure aren't going to. You're lucky if the food hits their tongue on the way down!
